Cafe Laziz app for iPhone and iPad
Cafe Laziz is a community cafe based in St Helens run by refugees and asylum seekers.
The café provides freshly cooked hot vegetarian meals and sweets with a drink for the very reasonable price of £5. Children and asylum seekers eat free thanks to a “Pay it Forward” scheme which is generously supported by the local community. It is a community café that operates just one day per week from within a Children’s Centre kitchen which is under-utilized so there are no running costs.
The main purposes of the café are to:
- offer work-based training
- offer formal qualifications (including customer service, food safety, allergen awareness and management)
- develop English language skills outside of a formal classroom
- aid community integration by encouraging the local community to use the café to try international food and drink and meet the recently settled Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Vulnerable Migrants
- provide progression opportunities through employer links
The long-term aim of the café is to provide paid employment and management opportunities to refugees.
